Commonwealth Bank 'Coke' Memorial

Commonwealth Bank 'Coke' Memorial and associated events

The Dave 'Coke' Wards Memorial (now named the Commonwealth Bank Coke Memorial) is Arrow's longest associated fundraiser. The annual event is held over two weekends in October raising approximately $8000 each year in support of important research projects into better treatments and a cure for leukaemia.

The most recent outcome of the event's 22 year collaboration has been the publication of a scientific paper outlining new research findings by Mark Lutherborrow in the respected American Journal of Hematology.

The first weekend consists of an ocean paddle and swim at Wamberal Beach on the Central Coast, followed by a Trivia Night at Wamberal Surf Club. The Surfing Contest is held on the following weekend and attracts over 120 keen surfers.

Chris Beeby's and Wayne King's efforts recognised

Dave 'Coke' Wards was a young man who loved surfboard riding and was involved in competitive surfing from a very early age. He was very supportive of surfers young and old and was a member of a number of board-riding clubs - North Shelly, North Avoca, Avoca, Wamberal and the Christian Surfers. David was diagnosed with leukaemia and in 1989 lost his battle with the disease. The surfboard riding competition is held in his memory and the proceeds are given each year to the Arrow Bone marrow Transplant Foundation.

Chris Beeby is the co-ordinator of the Dave 'Coke' Wards Surfing Contest. He can be contacted on 0435 143 200.
